Hyundai Motor's Xcient fuel-cell trucks to hit Korean roads from Nov

Hyundai Motor Group’s Xcient Fuel Cell heavy trucks will hit the roads in South Korea from November to deliver freights without emitting any carbon emissions under state regulatory sandbox program.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, Hyundai Glovis Co. and CJ Logistics Corp. each have purchased two units of 10-ton Xcient Fuel Cell from Hyundai Motor Co. to use the heavy trucks for their cargo delivery services starting November in Korea. They received regulatory permit to test out fuel-cell trucks under a sandbox program.

E-commerce leader Coupang also will employ one Xcient truck for delivery from November.

Under the current law in Korea, an addition to a fleet of heavy-duty truck is only allowed by a replacement. But the regulatory sandbox allows an exception for fuel-cell trucks.

The three companies can add Hyundai Xcient trucks to their fleet without replacing their existing vehicles for the next two years.

Hyundai Motor plans to use the exceptional clause to promote Xcient Fuel Cell heavy trucks in the local market.

Hyundai Motor Group has been the first in the world to establish mass production line for hydrogen trucks in July 2020.

Hyundai Motor earlier this year signed a memorandum of understanding with the world’s leading industrial gas manufacturing and sales company Air Products & Chemicals Inc. to replace the company’s entire gas delivery vehicle fleet with its carbon-free trucks.
