“Because you are my stars and my universe / These hardships are just temporary / Just shine as bright as you shine now.”
“My Universe,” a new collaboration between the K-pop group BTS and the UK band Coldplay, was released worldwide at 1 pm on Friday.
Simultaneously with the release that day, a video with handwritten lyrics by the two groups went up on Coldplay’s YouTube channel.
No official music video has yet been released. Coldplay’s record label Warner Music Group announced that an official music video would be coming out shortly.
The music and lyrics for “My Universe” were co-written by Coldplay and members of the BTS, including leader RM, Suga, and J-Hope. The track was produced by renowned hitmaker Max Martin.
Apart from the introduction and chorus by Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin, much of the song is sung by BTS.
The rock ballad is 3 minutes and 50 seconds long. Set against a powerful rock sound, the melody lends weight to the song’s message, with lyrics that read as both a sweet love song and an anthem of hope.
They seek to inspire courage in people who have been deprived of their everyday routines by the COVID-19 pandemic — sharing the sentiment that a new beginning awaits them.
Alternating between Korean and English lyrics, the BTS members offer words of support and comfort as they express endless love for a “you” who is likened to the universe.
The lines sung in Korean can be translated to read, “In my universe, you create another world,” “I fly away with you,” “We will follow you to adorn this long night,” and “please hold my hand.”
Martin reportedly traveled to Korea last April and met with BTS to collaborate on the song. The single released on Friday will also be included on Coldplay’s ninth album “Music of the Spheres,” which goes on sale on Oct. 15.
