Oct. 1, 2, 8 and 9: The CJ Cultural Foundation has organized a special concert to introduce four indie bands in October. On two weekends at the foundation's CJ Azit in Mapo district, the indie bands will be holding a concert to showcase their talents live.

Indie band Gift will kick start the "Dear Autumn" project on Oct. 1, followed by SURL on Oct. 2. On Oct. 8, Jibeom, who has featured on JTBC's hit music program "Super Band" will perform for his fans. Finally on Oct. 9, Na Sang-hyun Band, pictured above, will take to the stage, introducing the trio's single "Summer Days," which dropped in July. All four acts are given the opportunity to perform live with the support from the CJ Cultural Foundation.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Fridays and at 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Tickets cost 44,000 won ($37.60).

COFFEE AND HYPNOTIC Seoullo 7017 and Baek Sung-hee & Jang Min-ho Theater

Through Oct. 3:The National Theater Company of Korea has organized a unique performance for just one audience member at a time. Written by Seo Hyun-seok, “Coffee and Hypnotic” was created with the objective of utilizing not only the theater, but also Seoullo 7017. Seo, who was commissioned with the work, said he first began writing the piece thinking how people who had used the bridge back in times gone by perceive the place now?

This interactive theater performance invites one audience member at a time to a tea house in Gyeongseong Station in 1930 Seoul. (Gyeongseong is an old name for Seoul.) It begins from the information center of Seoullo 7017 and ends at the theater.

The performance takes place every 30 minutes from 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. everyday on week days and from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.

Tickets cost 30,000 won.

MARIE ANTOINETTE Charlotte Theater

Through Oct. 3:The Korean production of the hit musical Marie Antoinette is being staged at the Charlotte Theater in Jamsil, southern Seoul.

The musical tells the story of Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France, but some fictional characters have been included, like Margrid Arnaud, to add more drama to the life of the queen who was put to death by guillotine.

The nearly three-hour-long performance takes place in several settings, from the Palace of Versailles to Tuileries Garden to the Marais district, and the show will jump from place to place by using a revolving stage.

Musical actor Kim So-hyun again has been cast in the role of Marie Antoinette. Kim So-hyang will alternate as the queen.

Kim Yeon-ji and Jung Yu-ji have been cast to play the role of Margrid, who begs for money on the street but later becomes a revolutionary leader.

The male protagonist Fersen will be alternated by four actors — Min Woo-hyuk, Lee Seok-hoon, Lee Chang-sub, and Kim Do-young.

The show starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays and national holidays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays.

With toughened social distancing rules, 3 p.m. shows have been moved up to 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in July.

There are no shows on Mondays.

Tickets range from 70,000 won to 150,000 won.

SAMSON AND DELILAH Seoul Arts Center, Opera Theater

Oct. 7 – 10:The Korean National Opera is performing Camille Saint-Saëns’ grand opera “Samson and Delilah” for the first time in 40 years to mark the 100th anniversary of the French composer’s death. The piece has not been performed in Korea since being premiered by the company in 1980.

The opera is based on the famous story in the Bible, found in the Book of Judges. It’s the only opera by Saint-Saëns that is regularly performed in Western countries.

For the upcoming production, maestro Sebastian Lang Lessing will take the baton, while the work will be directed by Arnaud Bernard. For the role of Samson, tenors Kirstian Benedikt and Oliver Kook will alternate whileMezzo sopranos Lee A-kyeong and Kim Jung-mi alternate the role of Delilah. Baritones Samuel Youn and Lee Sung-wang will alternate the role of the High Priest of Dagon.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday performance will be streamed live via My Opera Live.

Tickets range from 10,000 won to 150,000 won.

GOOD MORNING GAGOK Seoul Arts Center, Concert Hall

Seoul Arts Center's ″Good Morning Gagok″ concert will be staged on Oct. 8 and 10 at its Concert Hall. Gagok is a genre of Korean vocal music that combines emotional and poetic lyrics with instrumental accompaniment. [SEOUL ARTS CENTER]

Oct. 8 and 10:Following the success of the Gagok Festival held over the summer, the Seoul Arts Center decided to organize a special performance to showcase gagok, a genre of Korean vocal music that combines emotional and poetic lyrics with instrumental accompaniment, in a drama-style concert. The concert will invite actor Kim Myeong-gon to host. Kim will interact with the audience to help them understand the songs that have stories better. A total of 28 gagok pieces that have been loved by Koreans for nearly 100 years have been selected for the upcoming performance.

Sopranos Park Mi-ja and Hong Ju-young, tenors Kim Woo-kyung, Kim Hyun-su and Lee Jeong-won and baritones Ko Seong-hyun, Gong Byeong-woo and Yang Jun-mo will take to stage to sing the gagok pieces.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets range from 20,000 won to 70,000 won.

JARASUM JAZZ FESTIVAL Jara Island

Oct. 9 – 11:The annual jazz festival is back and the line up for the upcoming event so far includes, Sunwoojunga with band Swja on Oct. 9, Kim Hyun-chul, Nam Woo-sun, Song Mi-ho, Oh Eun-hye and Suh Soo-jin as well as Kim Bo-ra Jazz and Minyo Project on Oct. 10, while musicians performing on Oct. 11 include Cho Eung-min and Bada Jazz Liners and Chung Won Young Band.

The performances will start at 4 p.m. each day and end at 10 p.m.

One-day ticket costs 50,000 won, while two-day ticket costs 80,000 won and three-day ticket costs 100,000 won.

GISELLE Seoul Arts Center, Opera Theater

Oct. 29 – 31:Popular romantic ballet “Giselle” will be performed by the Universal Ballet. The company's production of “Giselle” premiered in 1985 and began touring the world in 2011, holding sell-out performances. It is now considered one of the company’s representative pieces.

The ballet follows Giselle, a young girl who dies of a broken heart after learning that her lover is involved with someone else.

Tickets range from 10,000 won to 120,000 won.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

HEDWIG Chungmu Arts Center

Through Oct. 31:A dynamic mix of rock music and monologue, this eight-time Tony-nominated musical follows the life of a band called The Angry Inch. The Korean production of the musical premiered in 2005.

The story revolves around a boy named Hansel living in East Germany in 1988.

One day, a U.S. lieutenant proposes to marry Hansel if he changes his gender to female. Hansel eventually decides to adopt the name Hedwig and undergoes a sex change operation, but it fails. He flies to Kansas only to find that he has been dumped.

Undeterred, Hedwig starts wearing wigs and makeup, forms a band called The Angry Inch and becomes a rock star.

The Korean production of this popular musical features musical performers Oh Man-seok, Jo Seung-woo, Lee Kyu-hyung, Go Eun-sung, and Ren from K-pop boy band Nu’est, who alternate in the main role.

Tickets range from 55,000 won to 110,000 won.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.

LITTLE WOMEN Dream Art Center

Oct. 9 - 31: A play adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" will be performed at the Dream Art Center in Daehangno in central Seoul, for three weeks only.

The story follows the lives of the four March sisters— Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy — and details their passage from childhood to womanhood.

Song Jeong-ahn, behind the Korean musical "Pan" took the helm in directing the play.

As for the cast, actors So Jeong-hwa and Shin Eui-jeong alternate the role of Meg. Choi Yoo-ha will play the second sister Jo, while Hong Ji-hee and Jeong Woo-yeon have been cast to play the third sister Beth.

The role of little sister Amy will be played by Park Ran-joo.

The play begins at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Tickets cost 66,000 won.

BILLY ELLIOT D-Cube Arts Center

Through Feb. 2, 2022: “Billy Elliot” is back.

The story takes place in the 1980s, during a coal miners’ strike in Northern England. Billy happens to stumble across ballet during one of his boxing classes, and his life is changed forever after he discovers his love, and talent, for dance.

“Billy Elliot” is a heartwarming and humorous story about a young boy and his family trying to fulfill their dreams through music and choreography.

The kids who have been cast to alternate the role of Billy are, Kim Shi-hoon, Lee Woo-jin, Jeong Kang-hyuk and Joo Hyun-joon.

Ticket prices range from 60,000 to 150,000 won.

The show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends.
