Genesis GV60 adds face recognition tech for door lock

Genesis GV60, the first all-electric SUV of Hyundai Motor’s luxury marque due to be out late this year, will sport a face recognition feature that enables its driver to lock and unlock the vehicle without using a physical key, which would be the first of its kind in the global automobile industry.

The technology dubbed “Face Connect” to be applied to its upcoming all-electric SUV GV60 is expected to enhance customer experience by helping the car communicate with drivers, along with its fingerprint authentication system, according to Genesis on Thursday.

Driving experience will be personalized as the vehicle can identify the driver and then sync with their profile memorized using deep learning technology. The driver’s seat and steering wheel will be automatically adjusted based on the stored data, with head-up display, side mirrors and infotainment settings.

The face recognition system features a near infra-red (NIR) camera and deep learning technology for accurate detection, ensuring face recognition under any circumstances like at night and during dark and cloudy weather.

Drivers will be free from the need to carry keys all the time.

A maximum two faces can be registered in a car, encrypted and safely stored without security risk, and deleted any time for convenience.

Combined with a fingerprint authentication system, the face recognition feature will enable GV60 drivers to have complete and safe control of their cars only with biometric information without a smartphone or a smart key.

The new all-electric SUV will also have Genesis’s over-the-air (OTA) Software Update under the government’s regulatory sandbox case. The scope of wireless updates that have been limited to infotainment system features like navigation, digital cluster and head-up display now has been expanded to key areas on major electronic devices such as the EV integrated control device, suspension, brakes, steering wheel and airbags.

Starting with the GV60, Hyundai Motor Group will soon apply the face recognition technology and expanded wireless update to other models, the company said.
