Recovered African American gravestones to transfer to Maryland

The headstones once marked graves at Columbian Harmony Cemetery, an historic African American cemetery in DC. When a developer bought the property in 1960, most of the 37,000 buried remains were relocated to Maryland. Many of the gravestones were sold to a farmer in rural Virginia, who used them as riprap to control erosion on the Potomac River. In 2016, Virginia state senator Richard Stuart discovered the gravestones, while walking his newly-purchased riverfront property. He worked with the governor?s office and local historians to link them to the DC cemetery, and to relocate them to the memorial garden in Maryland. EPA/JIM LO SCALZO
