Appeal hearing in Case 002/02 against former Khmer Rouge leader Khieu Samphan

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on 16 August 2021 held the appeal hearing for former leader of the Khmer Rouge Khieu Samphan, where he sought to overturn a 2018 verdict convicting him of genocide charges and crimes against humanity. Khieu Samphan, 90, already serving a life sentence for a 2014 conviction of crimes against humanity, is the last surviving leader of the Khmer Rouge regime which ruled Cambodia from 1975-1979 and was responsible for an estimated death of 1.7 million people.
