“Escape From Mogadishu,” an action film by director Ryu Seung-wan, sold 2 million tickets in 17 days, the Korean Film Council announced Friday.

This number is garnering attention as “Escape From Mogadishu” is the first movie in 2021 to have reached the milestone in the industry suffering due to the pandemic. The movie was released on July 28, after the country started implementing the highest level of social distancing.

To celebrate this record, the actors who star in the movie — Kim Yoon-seok, Zo In-sung, Huh Joon-ho, Koo Kyo-hwan, Kim So-jin and Jeong Man-sik — released short videos online, thanking fans for their support.

Based on true events, “Escape from Mogadishu” follows stranded South Korea and North Korea embassy workers who join forces to escape Somalia during the civil war in 1991.
