Hyundai, KAA offer unprecedented cash awards to national archery team

Hyundai Motor Group, the long-time official sponsor of Korea¡¯s national archery team, will award generous cash prizes and Hyundai Motor and Kia cars to the archery players who together won four gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Hyundai Motor Group and the Korea Archery Association (KAA) held a welcoming ceremony for the national archery team on Tuesday to congratulate and reward the Olympic champions who set a record of bagging nine consecutive women's team victories, two men's team victories, the first gold medal in the mixed event, and three gold medals by one player at a single Summer Olympics for the first time in the Korean archery history.

In a welcoming speech, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman and KAA President Chung Euisun said that Korea¡¯s archery will challenge the status quo toward a higher place even though it has risen to the top based on the principle of transparent association operation and fair selection of players, while showing his commitment to continuous support.

The KAA set its reward at 300 million won ($260,000) for gold medalists in the individual and 200 million won in team events. As a result, An San will be awarded 700 million won for her triple crowns, Kim Je-deok 400 million won for his two golds while team event winners Oh Jin-hyek, Kang Chae-young, Jang Min-hee and Kim Woo-jin 200 million won, each. The six players will also receive a vehicle of their choice ranging from the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 to premium SUV Genesis EV70.

Other national team staff and KAA employees will receive a travel ticket to Jeju Island on top of a bounty according to their contribution.

Hyundai Motor Group has been an official sponsor of Korean archery for 37 years since 1985, contributing to the development and success of the sport. Hyundai Motor Group¡¯s R&D capabilities and cutting-edge technology has been applied to the development of archery training equipment and techniques since the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the Korean national archery team has harvested 27 golds, nine silvers and seven bronzes, which account for 69 percent of the entire medals in this sport.

World Archery President Prof. Dr. Ugur Erdener said in his video congratulatory message that the success of the Korean archery team in Tokyo was a monumental achievement. President Chung Eui-sun has not only played a major role in the success in Tokyo but is also contributing significantly to the development of archery around the world.
