Taihan Electric Wire Co., South Korea’s electric wire pioneer and industry No. 2 that recently joined the Hoban Group family, is returning to fiber-optic business after its exit nine years ago.

Taihan Electric Wire said Wednesday it has decided to add fiber-optic cable facilities to the Dangjin plant in South Chungcheong Province. Facility orders will be completed this month to start mass production in the first half of next year.

Kuwait Taihan, its fiber-optic cable manufacturing joint-venture in Kuwait, also will start facility set-up in the third quarter with an aim to release the prototype by the first half of next year.

Taihan Electric Wire plans to secure a combined production capacity of 5 million fiber kilometers from its Dangjin plant, Kuwait Taihan and Malesela Taihan Electric Cable Ltd (MTEC) based in South Africa, with investment in stages.

Detailed investment scale has not been disclosed yet but is estimated at 10 billion won ($8.7 million) for the Dangjin and Kuwait lines.

It has been nine years since the company pulled out of the fiber-optic cable market. Taihan Electric Wire sold off the entire stake in its former fiber-optic cable unit Taihan Fiberoptics Co. in 2012.

“By using the existing infrastructure, the company will be able to bring achievements in the foreseeable future. We’ll focus on the fiber-optic markets in North America and Europe with growing demand,” said an official from Taihan Electric Wire.
