South Korea’s top food delivery app Baedal Minjok has achieved $1 billion in gross merchandise value in June alone or $7.5 billion in the first half as social distancing rules toughened from renewed ravaging outbreak of Covid-19.

According to data from local app and retail trackers WiseApp, WiseRetail and WiseGoods on Tuesday, total spending by Koreans on food delivery platform Baemin reached 1.43 trillion won ($1.25 billion) in June.

The number of Baemin users stood at 13.3 million in June, compared with 9.89 million in the same month last year. One person spent an average 24,500 won per order.

By age, those in their 30s spent the most, taking up the largest proportion of 38.4 percent, followed by 20s 25.2 percent, 40s 24.1 percent and 50s and older 12.3 percent.

The total transactions for the first half of this year stood at 8.56 trillion won, surging 94 percent from 4.42 trillion won a year ago.

WiseApp, WiseRetail and WiseGoods analyzed data from credit, debit and mobile payments made by people aged 20 or over. The data did not reflect cash, gift certificate, and corporate credit card transactions.
