Krafton Inc., South Korea’s game powerhouse behind hit mobile game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), has partnered with Hollywood film producer Adi Shankar to create an animated series based on the PUBG universe.

Krafton announced on Wednesday that it has recruited Shankar as the executive creative producer for its Battleground game-based animation project.

Shankar has worked on various Hollywood blockbuster movies for more than a decade and is known as the youngest producer to top the North American box office in 2012 with “The Grey” starring Liam Neeson. He recently directed the production of the Netflix hit video game adaptation “Castlevania.”

“Our partnership with Adi Shankar represents our efforts to bring the PUBG universe into larger multimedia franchises,” said Krafton CEO Kim Chang-han.

Krafton has been actively looking to expand its original IPs beyond the realm of video game since last year. In 2020, the game publisher made a strategic investment in local production company Hidden Sequence.

It has recently released its first live-action short film “Ground Zero” starring Don Lee and “Mysteries Unknown: Birth of the Battlegrounds”, a documentary film about how PUBG was created. It is currently working to adapt Korean fantasy novel series “The Bird That Drinks Tears” into a game titled “Project Windless.”
