Prison riot in Colombo, Sri Lanka

The prisoners demanded that they too be either granted presidential pardons or those whose appeals are pending to be enlarged on bail. Sri Lanka being a majority Buddhist country grants pardons and releases a number of prisoners on specific religious days, or days important to the nation. Accordingly, yesterday (24 June) 93 prisoners, including 16 LTTE suspects were released to mark Poson Poya or the full moon day when Buddhism had been introduced to the island nation. However, there was a former parliamentarian and minister Duminda Silva, who was on death row for killing a rival politician Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra among the pardoned. This has proved controversial among most opposed to the incumbent government and encouraged prisoners to protest. Several prisoners in death row at another high security prison in Mahara, outside Colombo also staged a hunger strike demanding that they be pardoned or their death sentences be commuted to life.
