South Korean government will share near 500 million sets of data accumulated through the Data Dam project to spur big data-backed innovations in farming and healthcare sector.

The science and ICT ministry announced it will disclose 480 million sets of quality data collected in the Data Dam, one of the key projects of the Digital New Deal initiative which kicked off in July last year. The 170 types of data collected from various fields including healthcare, farming, and autonomous driving with the help of 674 businesses, institutions, universities, and hospitals will be gradually made public in ¡®AI Hub¡¯ by the end of this month. More than 40,000 data labelers have taken part in the processing of the data.

Shin Woo-jin, CEO of smart farming solution provider VIVANS, says that since agricultural production is largely affected by weather conditions, big data and AI can increase crop yields by up to 20 percent. The new data sets provided by government will help feed data into its smart farming solutions used by more than 200 farms across the country growing regional specialties like citrus, blueberry and garlic.

Medical AI platform operator Deepnoid also expects that the data to be released by government on lethal diseases like prostate, lung and breast cancer and stroke will significantly save time required to develop an AI-powered solution by up to two years. Deepnoid plans to use the data to enhance the performance and validate effectiveness of its 15 solutions that have been approved by government including Deep:Neuro detecting cerebral aneurisms.

Daejeon Express Transit Corporation is test running the AI CCTV safety system at Daejeon Station, which can detect 13 types of abnormal behaviors based on big data. The system is aimed at quickly responding to contingencies to ensure passenger safety.
