Ecological problems caused by container ship fire

The Singaporean flagged container cargo vessel MV X-Press Pearl caught fire around 9.5 nautical miles from the Colombo harbour on 20 May. Continued efforts to extinguish the major fire failed. After burning for 12 days the smouldering ship sank on 2 June when being towed towards deeper waters and its stern struck the sea bed. A huge amount of plastic granules and debris washed ashore on beaches from Colombo to Negombo and authorities feared another wave of massive pollution should the 278 tonnes of bunker oil and 50 tonnes of gas in the Singapore-registered ship's fuel tanks leak into the Indian Ocean. However, they are still intact and Sri Lanka Navy divers along with other related authorities are monitoring the situation amidst inclement weather conditions obstructing and limiting underwater visibility. Meanwhile, the ship?s Captain who was being questioned by the island?s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was arrested 14 June and produced before the Colombo High Court.
