Shinsegae Group’s online shopping platform SSG.com is spearheading ‘K-food’ boom in Southeast Asia, selling 6,000 Korean produces in Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore through the region’s biggest e-commerce platform Shopee.

Items available for the three countries have doubled from 3,000 last year and will be stretched to 10,000 by the year-end, according to company sources.

Korean snacks, instant noodles, and home meal replacement (HMR) products make up the lion’s share of 90 percent available on SSG.com store on Shopee. Personal safety supplies like masks and hand sanitizers take up the rest.

The Korean e-commerce operator saw its sales surge 170 percent on year in the three South Asian countries from January to May. The number of orders placed during the same period jumped fivefold.

Products ordered by overseas customers through Shopee are packaged at Neo, SSG.com’s distribution centers for online orders, and delivered by air from Shopee distribution centers in Gimpo. The whole process, from order to delivery, takes just 10 days.

The Korean e-commerce operator launched various promotional events to win over customers on Shopee. It also carried out tailored marketing strategies, arranging product orders in line with customer preferences of each country to attract more buyers.

In Taiwan where tea is an important part of the culture, Korean instant coffee mixes and traditional tea ranked first and second in sales. Emart’s private label No Brand Cheddar Cheese Ball, Jam and Cracker are popular in Malaysia. Korean-made masks are also top sellers. In Singapore, the mega-hit Honey Butter Chip sells well.

SSG.com plans to expand to the Philippines within the year.
