South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. won a 67 billion won ($59.2 million) order to supply equipment to a waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in the capital of Poland, expanding its presence in Europe’s growing WtE market.

Doosan Heavy said on Monday that its Germany subsidiary Doosan Lentjes GmbH has signed a 67 billion won supply deal for a WtE plant in Warsaw, Poland, in partnership with engineering, procurement, and construction company Posco Engineering & Construction.

Under the deal, Doosan Lentjes will supply major equipment including two boilers and nitrogen disposal tool for the plant by 2024.

It is the Korean company’s third WtE deal in Europe after its first in Olsztyn, about 200 kilometers of Warsaw, in August last year, and second in Dinslaken, Germany, in October. The previous deals were worth 220 billion won and 120 billion won, respectively.

Once construction is complete, the new WtE plant – ordered by Warsaw waste handling company MPO – will be the largest WtE plant in Poland. The plant will provide 20-megawatt electricity and heat by disposing daily 730 tons of city waste discharged by 850,000 citizens.

Park Hong-wook, head of power service BG at Doosan Heavy, said that the company will continue to put out efforts to aggressively target Europe’s WtE market that will see 80 new plant orders by 2025 under enhanced waste management environment standards.

A WtE plant generates electricity by gasifying, incinerating, and heating flammable household and industrial waste. It not only supplies power and heat but minimizes reclaimed land to reduce environmental pollution.

The number of new WtE orders in Europe has been on a rise as plant operators seek to replace old ones with new ones. Countries have also upped restrictions on landfill sites.

Shares of Doosan Heavy closed Monday 1.63 percent higher at 12,500 won.
