Riders of personal mobility vehicles are now required to have at least a motorcycle license, as a revision to the Road Traffic Act that passed the National Assembly in December goes into effect Thursday. The riders must also wear protective helmets and are subject to the same traffic and riding regulations as cyclists.

The revised Road Traffic Act prohibits more than one person from riding such a vehicle, and failure to comply results in a fine of 40,000 won (US$35). Unlicensed riders are subject to a fine of 100,000 won (US$88), and riders not wearing a protective helmet are subject to a fine of 20,000 won (US$17).

If children under the age of 13 are found riding such vehicles, their legal guardians will be fined 100,000 won (US$88).
