Korea's LG Innotek develops automotive Wi-Fi 6E module for 2022 mass production

LG Innotek Co. has developed the world's first automotive Wi-Fi 6E module, which enables 3 times faster data transmission than existing Wi-Fi 5, the South Korean electronics parts maker announced on Wednesday.

Its automotive Wi-Fi 6E module has a data transmission speed of 1.2 Giga bit per second. It takes only 2 milliseconds to connect to the network, seven times faster than the current speed, according to the company. The Wi-Fi 6E uses 6GHz band in addition to 2GHz and 5GHz bands, enabling faster data speed on increased volume and pathway for data transmission.

Automotive Wi-Fi module is a near-field, wireless communication component that connects in-vehicle infotainment systems to other smart devices and external routers.

“With the development of automatic driving technologies, vehicles have turned into spaces for entertainment and rest,” said the company, emphasizing the growing importance of Wi-Fi modules.

LG Innotek expects to commercialize the automotive Wi-Fi 6E module in 2022. The company has been moving aggressively to catch up with Japanese players that are currently dominating the global market. It is preparing to run joint promotions with Germany's Infineon Technologies, which supplies Wi-Fi 6E automotive chipsets.

According to global market researcher Techno Systems Research, the demands for automotive Wi-Fi communication modules will grow from 51.2 million units in 2020 to 84.2 million units in 2024.
