SK Global Chemical Co. has partnered with a pyrolysis oil producing company in the United States to introduce plastic chemical recycling technology and enhance environmental contribution.

The chemical subsidiary of SK Group announced Thursday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Brightmark Energy, a California-based waste solution provider and energy development company, to commercialize plastics-to-fuel business.

The two agreed to establish a long-term partnership to resolve plastic waste issue and draw up the business outline within the first half of the year, the company said.

The pyrolysis technology is a thermochemical decomposition technology that produces fuel oil by heating waste plastics, a core technology for plastic waste management.

SK Global Chemical expects the partnership with Brightmark to provide solution to recycle ever-increasing waste plastics.

“The pyrolysis technology is an important eco-friendly technology that can solve waste plastic problem in Korea,” SK Global Chemical president Na Kyung-soo said, adding that it will establish a plastic recycling system to contribute to the country’s green initiative and strengthen the company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) management.
