BMW Korea, No. 2 imported car brand in South Korea selling 69,000 units last year, will invest 60 billion won ($54.4 million) to expand its logistics center in the country over the next three years to shorten delivery time and establish extensive electric vehicle infrastructure.

BMW Korea announced Tuesday it will invest a total of 60 billion won in its BMW Vehicle Distribution Center in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province through 2023. With the investment, the company aims to expand the entire size of the center and overall facilities such as parking tower and high-voltage charging units.

The area of the center will be expanded to 442,760 square meters by 2023, nearly doubled from current 248,769 square meters. Car storage capacity will increase from 11,000 units to 18,000 units, largest among the country’s import car brands, to allow timely deliveries to customers.

The BMW Vehicle Distribution Center runs an integrated system for transport, warehousing and pre-delivery inspection with one operating firm in cooperation with the German headquarters. Customs business is also be handled inside the center.

For pre-delivery inspection, BMW Korea also plans to increase annual capacity to 120,000 units by the second half of this year from current 78,000 units. To meet the rising demand for EVs and plug-in hybrids, it will set up charging infrastructure enough to serve 70,000 cars per year based on the BMW i3 model.

“The expansion will help us speed up responses to customers’ demands. We’ll keep up investment in Korea to better service our customers,” said Jung Sang-chun, head of aftersales at BMW Korea.
