[WT논평] The year 2020 has been horrible (2)

There is a world food surplus. The reason that anyone goes hungry is a problem of distribution, not production.

The people who have saved billions of lives are the mechanical engineers who designed and built the amazing machines that plant, tend and harvest our crops; the plant and animal geneticists who have modified seeds to give us much higher yielding and more nutritious food plants and farm animals; and the chemists who developed fertilizers and pesticides, all of whom eliminated famines and greatly reduced the cost of food.

Last year, the average American farmer produced enough food to feed 166 people, up from 26 in 1960, and perhaps three to five people in 1800.

There is no reason to expect the rate of technological advance to slow down. What this means is that agricultural productivity will continue to increase with farmers using robots to maintain the fields and harvest the crops as seeds, fertilizers and pesticides become better and more precise in their application. All of this means food will continue to become less expensive and better.

The rate of progress in the medical sciences will continue to accelerate with more cures for diseases, such as cancers and other problems, and even reversing aging.

What is holding back progress is the ignorance of the population, due to educational bureaucracy often more interested in indoctrination than real education, and the political class that feed off that ignorance.

In time, it will become clear that locking down most of the population that was at little risk from COVID-19 (those under 65 with few serious conditions) was far more costly in terms of lives lost, and incomes and freedoms destroyed, than beneficial.

세계의 식품은 현재 남아돈다. 일부 인구가 굶주리는 것은 생산의 문제가 아니라 분배의 문제다.
 
수십억의 인명을 구제한 사람들은, 우리의 농작물을 파종하고 가꾸며 수확하는 각종 놀라운 기계를 설계하고 제작한 기계공학자들과 훨씬 높은 소출과 더욱 영양가 많은 식품용 식물과 농장 동물을 우리에게 공급하기 위해서 종자를 변형시킨 식물과 동물 유전학자들 및 비료와 살충제를 개발한 화학자들이다. 이들은 모두 기근을 제거하고 식품 가격을 대폭적으로 줄였다.
 
지난해 평균적인 미국의 농부 한 사람은 166명을 먹이기에 충분한 식품을 생산했다. 이는 1960년의 26명과 1800년의 아마도 3 내지 5명보다 증가한 것이다.
 
기술적인 발전의 속도가 느려질 것으로 예상할 이유는 없다. 이는, 각종 씨앗과 비료 및 살충제가 더욱 개량되고 더욱 정확하게 사용되는 가운데 농부들이 농경지를 가꾸고 농작물을 수확하기 위해 로봇을 사용함에 따라 농업 생산성이 계속 증가하는 것을 의미한다. 이 모든 것은, 식품이 갈수록 덜 비싸지고 품질이 더 좋아지는 것을 의미한다.
 
암과 다른 신체 이상과 같은 각종 질병의 치료법이 증가함에 따라 의료과학의 발전 속도는 계속 가속화될 것이며 심지어 인체의 노화를 역전시킬 수도 있을 것이다.
 
발전을 억제하는 것은, 진정한 교육보다 세뇌에 관심을 종종 더 기울이는 교육 관료체제로 인해서 무지해진 대중과 그런 무지를 먹이로 삼는 정치 계급이다.
 
심각한 신체 이상이 거의 없어서 코로나19에 걸릴 위험이 별로 없는 65세 이하 인구의 대부분을 집안에 머물게 한 조치가 인명 손실과 소득 및 자유의 파괴란 측면에서 이익이 되기보다는 훨씬 대가가 컸다는 사실이 때가 되면 명백히 밝혀질 것이다.
