Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will highlight their next-generation display technology at the CES 2021 trade show to be open Monday, pitting against each other with innovation in screen expansion and form factors.

LG Electronics will debut a 48-inch hybrid bendable OLED that could shift between flat and curved modes for multi-purpose use together with a new CSO (Cinematic Sound OLED) solution.

The bendable CSO display features a slimmer film exterior that vibrates the display to emit location-based audio. The screen can be bent up to 1000R, allowing users to use the paper-thin organic LED as a flat screen when watching TV and as a curved screen when playing a game.

A large TV screen is another trend that dominates the consumer market. Samsung Electronics will introduce a large 110-inch Micro LED TV at the virtual show. The self-illuminating display does away with the backlight and color filters of conventional displays, producing lifelike colors and brightness through 24 million individually controlled LEDs.

LG will respond with ‘OLED evo’, the first model equipped with its next-generation OLED panel. The OLED evo technology emits light of more sophisticated wavelengths, delivering sharper image quality and brightness compared to existing displays.

A Mini LED TV is another area where fierce competition is expected across the industry.

Samsung’s Quantum Mini LED is 1/40 the height of a conventional LED, enabling very thin micro layers filled with many more LEDs that lead to ultra-fine and precise control of the densely packed LEDs.

LG is already focusing on the global premium TV market with its Mini LED TV QNED along with OLED TV and premium LCD TV, 'LG NanoCell TV'.

The two will also brag their AI and content technology to bring more benefits and convenience to TV watchers.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are due to hold a pre-show media conference on Monday at 11 pm and 10 pm KST, respectively, to present their next-generation technology blueprint. The two will run a virtual exhibition hall on the CES 2021 website for five days from Jan. 11 to 15.
