South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. ranked No. 4 car brand in Brazil in terms of auto sales last year, three notches higher from the previous year thanks to growing sales of its strategic car models that are tailored to meet consumer demands and tastes in the South American country.

According to a dealers’ association in Brazil on Tuesday (local time), Hyundai Motor sold total 167,443 vehicles in Brazil in 2020 despite a 26 percent plunge in overall auto sales in the Brazilian market amid the pandemic slowdown.

Its market share also rose to 8.58 percent in 2020 from 7.81 percent in 2019, ranking the market No. 4 versus No. 7 in the previous year.

General Motors took up the largest 17.35 percent share, followed by Volkswagen with 16.80 percent and Fiat Chrysler with 16.50 percent.

Hyundai HB20, Hyundai Motor’s Brazil-exclusive model, became the second best-selling model after 86,548 units were sold. The company launched the strategic model in 2012 when it advanced into the South American nation. Compact sport utility vehicle Creta, launched in January 2017, also has received warm response from local customers, becoming the best-selling model in the segment in 2018 and achieving the 200,000-unit milestone in production at the end of November.

Hyundai Motor shares gained 1.48 percent to end at 206,000 won in Seoul on Thursday.
