Yongseok Shin, professor of economics at Washington University in St. Louis, is this year’s economist choice by the Maeil Business Newspaper and the Korean-American Economic Association (KAEA). The award first started in 2006 this year was held virtually in a webinar of 50 economists. Shin, a graduate of Seoul National University, studied under Nobel laureate Thomas Sargent while working on his Ph.D. at Stanford University. Like Sargent, Shin focuses on macroeconomics and mid- to long-term economic growth. His recent papers have dealt with technological change and inequality, macroeconomic transitions, and human capital and labor supply. Most recently he has published a number of papers on pandemic economics, including “Who Should Work from Home during a Pandemic? The Wage-Infection Trade-off” and “COVID-19 Doesn’t Need Lockdowns to Destroy Jobs: The Effect of Local Outbreaks in Korea.”
