S. Korea and Turkmenistan to expand economic cooperation in energy, ICT sectors

South Korea and Turkmenistan agreed to expand cooperation in chemical plants, health and more.

The top trade officials of the two countries including Korea trade minister Sung Yun-mo and Myratgeldi Meredov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan's for oil and gas sector discussed measures to strengthen cooperation in five areas – trade investment and chemical plants, ICT, health and agriculture, education and culture, and finance and public security during the eighth Korea-Turkmenistan economic council meeting held virtually on Monday.

The officials discussed additional projects for Kiyanly Gas Chemical Plant, the Central Asian nation¡¯s first large gas chemical plant that the two countries built together. The follow-up projects will involve operating and managing the plant, marketing products and training engineers.

The two countries will also seek to collaborate on Caspian Sea seawater desalination project.

Other areas for cooperation include green energy and digital transformation. Next year, the two countries will work on building geographic data center, introducing electric buses and reforestation project in Turkmenistan.

Separately on the same day, the Korean Marine Equipment Research Institute and Turkmenistan Balkan shipyard signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperating in shipbuilding industry. Under the agreement, the Korean team will support shipyard modernization in Turkmenistan.
