신종 코로나바이러스 확산이 지속하자 LG전자가 이달 24일부터 스페인 바르셀로나에서 열리는 세계 최대 모바일 전시회 'MWC 2020' 참가를 전격 취소했다. MWC에 참가하는 국내 기업 중 참가 취소를 결정한 것은 LG전자가 처음이다.

LG Electronics Inc. opted to skip the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2020 in Barcelona, Spain as a safety precaution against the coronavirus outbreak, the first South Korean name to declare no-show at the world’s largest mobile show.

LG전자는 5일 보도자료를 내고 "최근 신종 코로나바이러스가 확산함에 따라 고객과 임직원의 안전을 우선시해 MWC 2020 전시 참가를 취소하기로 했다"고 밝혔다.

“We have decided to withdraw our participation in the MWC 2020 to put the safety of our employees and customers first amid the spread of the new coronavirus,” the Korean tech giant said in a statement Wednesday.

회사 관계자는 “숙소, 항공 등도 계약돼 있어 취소했을 때 비용 부담이 있지만, 고객과 임직원의 안전을 고려해 결정했다"고 말했다.

An LG official added that the cancellation would incur costs as arrangements have already been made, but that the company came to the decision by prioritizing safety.

과거 MWC 규모에 비춰볼 때 올해에도 MWC에는 관람객이 10만명 이상이 몰리고, 이중 중국인 관람객이 3만∼4만명을 차지할 것으로 예상된다. MWC 행사 특성상 참가자들이 직접 기기를 만지고 체험하는 과정에서 감염 위험성이 크다는 문제가 대두돼왔다.

The event generally gathers 100,000 visitors worldwide, with Chinese accounting for 30,000 to 40,000. The conference involves participants touching and trying out the various devices on display, raising the risk of infection.

LG전자는 당초 MWC에서 새 스마트폰인 'V60 씽큐'와 'G9 씽큐'를 발표할 예정이었지만, 이 역시 연기하기로 했다. 다음달께 출시 국가별로 개별 공개 행사를 개최할 것으로 예상된다.

LG Electronics was originally going to unveil its new flagship smartphones V60 ThinQ and G9 ThinQ at the MWC. But it is now expected to hold separate showcases in each country starting next month.

LG전자는 전시 참가 취소에도 불구하고 글로벌 이동통신사와 사전에 약속했던 미팅은 별도로 진행할 예정이다.

Despite its MWC cancellation, it would carry on meetings with global mobile carriers as scheduled, the company added.
