Soil mapping in Austria

The map would be used to help farming and policy decisions about land usage and related rights. Aust told epa that a fertile soil layer can take decades to regenerate after heavy rains or otherwise damaged land. As well as working on soil mapping, Aust campaigns to raise awareness about land usage and consideration of local soil, lamenting that humus-rich soil and highly valuable agricultural land that need to be protected and maintained are much cheaper than most construction grounds. Aust is part of a global effort to better protect and use the earth's resources. The Global Footprint Network, a United States-based international non-profit research group, calculates the Earth?s Overshoot Day, an illustrative date on which humanity?s consumption of natural resources exceeds the planet?s ability to replenish them. The date for 2019, 29 July, came two months earlier than 20 years ago, further illustrating the rapid rate of soil erosion. Maria Helena Semedo, Deputy Director-General for Climate and Natural Resources at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) said on 15 May 2019: 'Today the equivalent of one soccer pitch of soil is eroded every five seconds, and the planet is on a path that could lead to the degradation of more than 90 percent of all the Earth's soils by 2050.'
