Cyprus excavations for Missing Persons

epa07521257 Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) investigators, both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, at work following information received from sources about the presence of twenty or more Greek Cypriots missing since 1974 in the area of Turkish occupied Lapithos, Cyprus, 17 April 2019, issued 22 April 2019. The archaeologists, using both machinery and manual labour, have been working since mid-February 2019. The site in Lapithos was excavated in 2014. The excavation revealed the remains of ten people which were identified and given to their families. No complete skeletons were found, only bone fragments. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Since then, the fate of hundreds of people remains unknown. A Committee on Missing Persons has been established, upon agreement between the leaders of the two communities, with the scope of exhuming, identifying and returning the remains of missing persons to their relatives. In the past thirteen years, the CMP managed to identify and return the remains of approximately 927 persons, out of 2,002. Reports state that in 2018, the CMP was able to locate the remains of only 13 persons, compared to 47 the year before and 107 in 2016.
