South Korea’s LG Electronics said cumulative sales of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs reached a sales milestone of 3 million units over the last six years they were in the market.

LG Electronics sold a total of 3.2 million OLED TVs as of the end of September, compared with the modest 3,600 units in 2013 when global sales in the new type self-illuminating panels totaled 4,000 at the time LG first introduced such TVs.

OLED TV sales rose steadily across the globe and maintained its leading position as consumers worldwide have recognized the superior performance of the product while its prices have become more cost-competitive through advancement in technology.

“Unlike liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, OLED TV doesn’t require a backlight unit as the pixels are self-emitting, producing the best natural-looking colors,” said an official from LG Electronics. “OLED display technology also provides wide viewing angles with no distortion of colors.”

What Hi-Fi, a Britain-based technology review company, recently picked LG’s OLED TV AI ThinQ as the best product among 55- and 65-inch TV models. “A big and beautiful TV with a vibrant picture rich in detail, this is another LG OLED we’d be proud to own,” it said.

To ride on the growing demand in OLED TVs, an increasing number of global TV makers have jumped into the OLED TV market. LG was the sole producer of OLED TVs in 2013, but now 15 firms across the world are making the products including Japan’s Sony and Panasonic, China’s Hisense and Europe’s Loewe.
