Coway CEO Lee Hae-sun.
Coway Co., South Korea’s leading water and air purifier maker, said on Wednesday that it has added air purifier business in Japan to expand its presence in the growing premium rent-to-own home appliance market.

Airmega - launched for the first time in Japan - is an air purifier brand with four models that is already popular in other regions. Airmega 400 and Airmega 300 models are popular in the United States, Airmega Storm is a steady seller in Korea and Malaysia, and the latest Airmega 600 has recently been launched in Korea and China.

Coway advanced into Japan in 2012 with water purifiers. The addition of air purifier brand would expand its product category in the neighboring country. Japan is one of world’s three largest air purifier markets along with the United States and China. The market is dominated by Japanese names like Sharp Corporation and Panasonic Corporation.

Coway’s Airmega products will be available at Japan’s major offline store Bic Camera and other online shopping malls.

An unnamed official from Coway said that it will aggressively make inroads into Japan’s premium air purifier market based on its air care technology that has been approved globally in the United States and Malaysia.
