The polluted and algae filled waters of the Beira Lake

The Beira Lake, occupying around 65 hectares, flows into the Indian Ocean near the Galle Face hotel and is surrounded by large business establishments as well as residences, while it is also frequented by local and migrating species of storks, pelicans, and home to monitor lizards and various species of fish. The lake turns green and produces unusually bad odour due to the pollution and algae that is present in the water.
