Reports state that the few months old political party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna indirectly led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa won an overwhelming majority of the local government council elections for 340 bodies held on 10 February. While this party had campaigned for this poll to be considered as a referendum on the performance of the unity government of both major political parties, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) under President Maithripala Sirisena and the United National Party (UNP) under Premier Wickremesinghe, the results indicated a severe setback with the UNP coming a distant second and the President-led SLFP and United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA) falling into third place.
