Myanmar's first elected president in over 50 years is sworn in

The new president of Myanmar, Htin Kyaw was sworn in on 30 March as the first elected civilian president in more than 50 years. Htin Kyaw, 69, from the National League for Democracy (NLD), was elected this month by the legislature. The NLD gained an absolute majority with a landslide win in elections last November. The new president will rule as a confidant of Suu Kyi, who is not qualified for the presidency because of a rule in the Constitution adopted by the military junta, which vetoes candidates with foreign families.
