Cargill, a global trader and processor of agricultural commodities, opened the world’s largest animal feed plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, on Wednesday, its Korea unit Cargill Argi Purina said.

“The opening of the plant proves Cargill’s continued commitment to the sustainable growth of Korea’s livestock industry,” Lee Bo-kyeun, Cargill Korea representative and head of Cargill Argi Purina, said in a press conference in Seoul.

Cargill invested 115 billion won ($100 million) to build the new plant with an annual capacity of 870,000 tons on the 52,620-square-meter site.

Cargill Korea representative Lee Bo-kyeun announces the opening of the animal feed plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, on Wednesday.

It will produce high-quality and safe poultry, ruminant, swine and pet food products under the Purina & Butrena brands for Korean livestock breeders, the company said.

“The company aims to help advance animals’ performance and so the growth of our customers by supplying quality feed products,” Lee said.

The U.S.-based agro business giant, which started its animal feed business in Korea in 1967, has expanded its investments here, betting on the growth of Korea’s livestock industry. Cargill also runs an Asia-Pacific Technology Application Center of Cargill Agri Purina Korea in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, to develop customized products.

According to industry data provided by the company, the Korean animal feed market amounts to 8.9 trillion won this year.
