President Park Geun-Hye has vowed to actively consider the recovery of the Sewol ferry that sank off South Korea's southwest coast almost a year ago, killing over 300 people aboard.

Expressing her 'deep condolences' to the families of the deceased and the missing in the ferry sinking on April 16 last year, Park made the remarks at a meeting with her senior secretaries on Monday.

She said that if a conclusion of the ongoing technical review for the feasibility of salvation of the submerged ship is reached, the government will 'actively consider' lifting the hull.

With the first anniversary of the Sewol tragedy just days away, family members of the victims have held rallies in downtown Seoul, demanding the doomed ship's recovery and the government's thorough inquiry into the accident.

Meanwhile, lawmakers will discuss matters related to the ferry's recovery, which is expected to take 12 to 18 months at a cost of up to more than 200 billion won.
