[Press Release] IT trade figures for July (Aug 3, 2012)

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy has released its trade figures for July. The nation posted a $2.7 billion trade surplus. Exports fell sharply due to the sluggish performance of ships, a troubled global economy, and a strong base effect from a year earlier. Weaker domestic demand also depressed inbound shipments.
Exports declined 8.8 percent year on year to $44.6 billion, and the average value of all exports per day dropped 10.7 percent to $1.9 billion. While general machinery and automobile parts enjoyed steady growth, outbound shipments of ships and wireless communications devices continued to decline. Exports to advanced economies such as Japan and the United States saw an increase. Among developing nations, exports to the ASEAN region showed positive growth, but outbound shipments to China declined.
Meanwhile, imports fell 5.5 percent from a year earlier to $41.9 billion. The average value of all imports per day declined 7.4 percent to $1.7 billion. Inbound shipments of raw materials dropped 1.1 percent. While imports of gas and crude oil rose, demand for steel and coal posted negative growth. Both capital goods and consumer goods decreased 2.5 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively. Inbound shipments from the United States and the ASEAN region showed positive growth.
