S. Korea to Run New Tidal Power Station ahead of Plan

South Korea will begin operation of Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station this week earlier than scheduled in order to meet rising power demand in summer seasons. The tidal power station to be located in Ansan, southwest of Seoul, is the world's largest one currently under construction which began in December 2004.
The operation is ahead of schedule by three months and six out of 10 units will be running from this week after successful trial operations, the government said on August 2. The operation of six plants would produce electricity of 15 million kWh which can cover a city with population of 160,000 people. The phase-by-phase power generation will contribute much to easing power shortages, a government official said.
