Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) received a new order for a drill ship and a semi-submersible drilling rig.

On Thursday, DSME revealed that it had received a $1.1 billion order from a Latin American company for one drill ship and one semi-submersible drilling rig. A drill ship is a maritime vessel equipped with drilling apparatus, used mostly for offshore drilling.

The orders will be built at the Okpo shipyard. The drill ship will be delivered by March 2013, and drilling rig will be delivered by August of the same year.

The drill ship order was for model DSME-10000, a ship developed independently by DSME which measures 243m in length and 42m in width. The semi-submersible drilling rig is 118m in length, 97m in width, and 134m in height.

Both facilities will be equipped with the global positioning system (GPS) and the dynamic positioning system, a computerized control system enabling accurate location search services. The facilities will also include the most advanced drilling system, allowing them to bore into a maximum of 10,000 ft (3000m) underwater and pump the oil up to 40,000 ft.

DSME started building the drilling rig model at hand in 2005 and has successfully completed and delivered nine orders.

DSME's aggregate earning in shipping and offshore facilities this year is 9.9 billion won ($8.7 million).
