Google, Samsung unveil Nexus S smartphone

Google Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. introduced on Tuesday the latest Nexus smartphone running on an updated version of the Android operating system, in their fresh challenge to Apple Inc.'s iPhone.

The Nexus S is the first Android device powered by "Gingerbread," Google's latest version of its mobile operating system, which is faster than the previous one, the company said in its official blog. The updated software supports near-field communication technology, which enables people to make payments with their phones wirelessly.

The Nexus S manufactured by Samsung Electronics features a 4-inch screen, Samsung's 1-gigahertz processor and two cameras in the front and the rear.

"We co-developed this product with Samsung -- ensuring tight integration of hardware and software to highlight the latest advancements of the Android platform," Andy Rubin, Google's vice president of engineering, said in the blog.

With its first Nexus brand phone made by Taiwan's HTC Corp., the Nexus One, Google made a fresh entry into the mobile phone market in January, stretching its business realm beyond the Internet search market and raising the level of competition with U.S. smartphone giant Apple.

Unlike Apple, which is the exclusive phone maker of its mobile software, Google has given its mobile operating system free of charge, spawning more than 100 Android devices made by a string of phone makers.

With Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics Inc, Motorola Inc., HTC and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB making a variety of Android phones, more than 200,000 Android devices are activated every day around the world, according to Google's latest tally.

Samsung Electronics, the world's second-largest mobile phone maker, that has vigorously tried to play catchup in the smartphone market, counted on the Android system for its flagship smartphone model, the Galaxy S.

"It has been our ambition in working with Google to continue to push the Android platform forward and create a smartphone that has both superior functionality and a stunning user-experience," Shin Jong-kyun, Samsung's president of mobile business, said in a statement.

The Nexus S will be first released in the United States after Dec. 16 both through a mobile carrier T-Mobile USA Inc. and a retailer Best Buy Co., according to Google. (Yonhap News)

삼성이 만든 구글 차세대 레퍼런스폰 '넥서스S' 공개

삼성전자가 세계 최초로 안드로이드 2.3버전(진저브레드)를 적용해 만든 구글의 차세대 레퍼런스폰(기준을 제시하는 폰) '넥서스 S'가 전격 공개됐다.

구글은 6일(현지시간) 구글 블로그 내 마이크로사이트(googleblo.blogspot.com)를 통해 진저브래드 탑재 스마트폰 '넥서스S(GT-I9020)'을 일반에 소개했다.

'넥서스S'는 구글이 안드로이드 플랫폼 발전을 위해 삼성전자를 하드웨어 파트너로 선정했다는데 의미가 있다. 구글은 지난해 대만 HTC와 공동으로 첫 번째 레퍼런스폰 '넥서스원'을 공개했었다. 스마트폰 업계에서는 전세계에서 870만대(11월 말 기준) 판매된 '갤럭시S와' 100만대 공급을 돌파한 '갤럭시 탭'의 성공이 삼성전자와 구글의 파트너십 강화에 영향을 미친 것으로 보고 있다. 실제 최근 가트너 발표에 의하면 삼성전자는 올해 3분기 미국에서 팔린 안드로이드 플랫폼 기반 스마트폰 중 32.1%를 차지하며 1위를 기록했다. 앤디 루빈 구글 부사장은 이날 "삼성전자와 하드웨어와 소프트웨어 측면에서 밀접한 연계로 최근 안드로이드 플랫폼을 적용한 '넥서스S'를 공동 개발했다"고 거듭 강조했다.

'넥서스 S'는 최신 안드로이드 2.3 플랫폼(진저브레드)을 탑재했으며 4인치 슈퍼아몰레드 디스플레이, 500만 화소 카메라, 1500mAh 배터리 등을 장착했다. 커브 형태의 디자인은 인체공학적 스타일을 구현한다.

특히 '넥서스 S' 는 근거리 무선통신이 가능한 NFC(Near Field Communication) 칩을 탑재해 NFC 칩이 탑재된 디바이스 간 정보를 공유할 수 있다. 이 밖에도 자이로 센서를 통해 사용자가 상하좌우로 움직이며 실감나는 게임 컨텐츠를 즐길 수 있으며, 3D 그래픽, HD 급 영상 지원 등 강력한 멀티미디어 기능을 제공한다.

삼성전자 무선사업부 신종균 사장은 "모두가 기다려온 안드로이드 2.3 플랫폼의 첫 제품을 출시하게 돼 기쁘며 넥서스 S는 혁신적인 안드로이드 운영체제에서 삼성과 구글의 돈독한 파트너십과 안드로이드 대표주자로서 삼성의 위치를 증명해주는 제품"이라고 말했다.

한편, 구글은 미국에서 '넥서스 S'를 12월 중순부터 온라인과 베스트바이(Best Buy)를 통해 판매할 예정이다. 구글은 오는 20일부터 영국 카폰웨어하우스(Carphone Warehouse)를 통해서도 '넥서스S'를 판매할 계획이라고 전했다.
