Introduced to the island in 1867 by James Taylor, the British planter who arrived in 1852, tea has become one of the main foreign exchange earners to the nation. Among the world�s foremost tea producing countries it accounts to more that 15 per cent of the GDP generating some 800 million dollars annually. The tea sector alone employs, directly or indirectly over 1 million people in Sri Lanka. Grown in the highlands as well as the lowlands, the humidity, cool temperatures and rainfall in the island's central highlands provide a climate that favors the production of high quality tea.
