The polls, the first after nearly three decades without the threat of terrorism, to elect the 225 members to the island�s parliament was held with a massive 7,620 candidates from 336 political parties, 301 independent groups and 637 parties and groups in the fray. The main tussle is among the ruling United People�s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) which is seeking a two thirds majority in the House, the main Opposition United National Party (UNP) which is contesting under the United National Front alliance and the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) which is led by former Sri Lankan army chief now under detention Gen. (retired) Sarath Fonseka. With the Sinhala and Tamil New Year which falls on April 13 and 14, many are expected to take an extended holiday after the elections.
