HHI Achieves Production of 20 Million bhp in Medium-Speed Engines

South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has reached the total production milestone of 20 million brake horsepower (bhp) in medium-speed engines in the shortest time in the world.
HHI said Monday that it successfully reached the production of 20 million bhp in medium-speed engines in 20 years after completing trial operations of three donkey engines for 4,078bhp scale vessel, which will be equipped in 13,100 TEU (or Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) container ship of Germany's Rickmers.
Such outstanding performance of HHI is remarkable as it has achieved the record in 19.7 years whereas European engine makers with 100 years of history such as Germany's MAN Diesel Co. had taken more than 50 years. HHI, which made its debut in the medium-speed engines sector by producing 10 units of medium-speed engines in August 1990, has achieved the total production of 10 million bhp for 5,000 units by 2007 through expanding the manufacturing facilities and advancing its technologies.
Since 2008, HHI has added more fuel for producing the engines by securing 4,000 more units with a total production of 20 million bhp in three years.
HHI has an annual manufacturing capacity of 2,500 units of mid-sized engines, which are known as the engines with capacity between 1,000 bhp and 6,000 bhp. HHI has provided approximately 25% of the medium-speed engines used for completed vessels in the world last year.
