Samsung SDS Data Center Receives International Recognition

The stability of data centers of Samsung SDS, a system integration unit of Samsung Group, has received international recognition. As the data center market is constantly growing thanks to the diffusion of cloud computing, Samsung SDS' scope of business is expected to be enlarged with its certification obtained. Cloud computing refers to information processing collectively managed on a central server.
Samsung SDS announced on Wednesday its ICT Center in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, has obtained Tier III certification.
The Tier Classification System, created by the U.S.-based Uptime Institute, is an international benchmarking system to effectively evaluate data center infrastructure. The system consists of four tiers, and the Tier III is the second-highest level.
An official from Samsung SDS said that the 24-hours-on-call maintenance of a data center throughout a year should be possible in order to receive the Tier III. The official added that a strict evaluation on various areas, including construction, electricity and machinery, is undertaken.
The ICT Center in Suwon is designed to withstand a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and to keep operating even when a sudden blackout happens. According to Samsung SDS, the ICT Center is one of a few data centers with the Tier III in the world, beside the Fujitsu Data Center in the UK.
