The last Shah died in exile after fleeing Iran in 1980 during the Islamic revolution led by Ayatollah Khomeini that toppled him. The Nowruz holiday, which means new day, is celebrated by Iranian people and initiated in Ancient Iran and has spread to many other parts of the world including parts of West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Northwestern China and the Caucasus. Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Iranian year, which usually occurs on March 21 or the previous/following day.
