ISRAEL US SENATOR SPECTER VISITS

Israel's cabinet approved on 28 December plans to call up more than 6,000 reserve soldiers for a possible ground operation in the Gaza Strip, as tanks and infantry also headed toward the salient. Military officials however have said that for the moment Israel's offensive against Hamas in the enclave was being conducted solely though airpower, and any decision to send in the armour and foot- soliders would be made later, according to operational assessments. As the Israeli attacks entered their second day, the Israel Air Force bombed targets in Gaza and militants in the enclave launched around 20 missiles at the Jewish state.
