Smiling beside Nash in a stunning black dress is Alicia. 앨리샤가 멋진 검정 드레스 차림으로 내쉬 곁에서 미소짖는다.
NASH: ...Miss Alicia Larde?
GOVERNOR: How do you do?
내쉬: …앨리샤 라드양?
주지사: 반갑습니다.
PHOTOGRAPHER: Professor, please. You and the governor....
ALICIA: (to photographer) Wait, one second.
사진사 : 교수님. 교수님과 주지사님…….
앨리샤 : (사진사에게) 잠깐만요.
Alicia steps into the shot, begins adjusting Nash's bow-tie.
앨리샤가 촬영권(圈) 내로 들어와 내쉬의 나비 넥타이를 다시 매만져 주기 시작한다. ALICIA: I'm sorry. I want a copy of this. First big date and all, you know, so you boys need to look good.
앨리샤 : 죄송해요. 이 사진 한 장 꼭 주세요. 특별한 첫 데이트이니까요. 남자들이 근사하게 나와야죠.
She pulls a handkerchief from her purse and slips the folded cloth into his breast pocket and brushes his lapel.
그녀는 가방에서 손수건을 꺼내서 내쉬의 상의 윗주머니에 접어서 넣고는 옷깃을 턴다.
ALICIA: Which is not a state you find yourselves in altogether naturally.
앨리샤: 이 분위기에 당신이 자연스럽게 어울려 보이지가 않아요.
Nash and governor just stares at her.
내쉬와 주지사는 단지 그녀를 바라볼 뿐이다.
ALICIA: There. Better. (to governor) I'm surprising him.
GOVERNOR: You just keep on surprising him. (to Nash) Professor.
앨리샤: 됐어요. 훨씬 낫군요. (주지사에게) 제가 교수님을 놀라게 하지요.
주지사: 계속 놀라게 해 주세요. (내쉬에게) 교수님.
The governor holds Nash's hand and poises. Alicia appraises her work beside the photographer. The frame whitens in a flash. 주지사는 내쉬의 손을 잡고 포즈를 취한다. 앨리샤는 사진사 옆에서 자신이 한 일을 평가한다. 화면은 플래쉬가 터지면서 하얗게 된다.

처음 만나는 사람에게 인사할 경우 How do you do?도 있지만 How are you? How are you doing?을 많이 사용한다. 이때 대답은 의례적인 인사이기 때문에 Fine, thanks. 보다는 very good, very well, thanks.

'원본'은 original이다. 형용사를 잘 쓰면 원어민과 통하는 현지 영어를 구사할 수 있는데 big은 일상에서 유용하게 사용되는 형용사다.
'박장대소'는 'big smile','거물'은 'Mr. Big', '호언장담'은 'big words'다. nice도 감초처럼 사용하는데, 해변에서 비키니 수영복을 입고 나타난 애인에게 '몸매 좋은데'라고 말해주고 싶으면 nice를 사용해서 You have a nice body.라고 해주면 된다. 여인의 매력을 발산하는 앨리샤의 대쉬 앞에 내쉬는 포근함을 느끼면서 무너져간다.

■ Hypochondriac's sad song becomes an irritating refrain(반복되는 건강걱정으로 짜증나게 하는 건강염려증 환자)
DEAR ABBY: How do you deal with a hypochondriac? My brothers and I lost our dear mother to cancer when we were in our teens. Daddy has recently been diagnosed with a pernicious form of melanoma, which has a low survival rate.
Our father has been married to his second wife, " Doris," for 20 years. Doris is a textbook hypochondriac. She denies it, of course, and insists that her health is bad. So bad, in fact, that she didn't see the irony of telling my sister-in-law, who was undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma, that " no one understands what it's like to live with a chronic condition." Doris was referring to her allergies!
Now Daddy is battling cancer. He and Doris came to visit his three children and multiple grandchildren. Doris talked about her head cold the entire visit, and our time with Daddy was cut short because she needed to be driven back to the hotel. (No one else could detect her symptoms.)
I'm sure Doris loves my father, and after 20 years of marriage, they're certainly used to each other. But now that Daddy is facing death, I'm having trouble supporting Doris' emotional needs because her hypochondria is so irritating. Still, Dad wouldn't want us to abandon his second wife, despite her psychosomatic quirks. What do you suggest? -- NEEDS HELP UP NORTH
건강염려증 환자를 어떻게 대해야 하죠? 저와 형제들이 10대 소년일 때 어머니께서 암으로 돌아가셨어요. 아버지께서 최근에 치명적인 악성 흑색종 진단을 받으셨어요.
아버지께서는 20년 전에 두 번째 부인인 '도리스'와 결혼하셨어요. 도리스는 전형적인 건강염려증 환자에요. 물론 본인은 그게 아니고, 건강이 안 좋은 거라고 주장해요. 사실, 임파종에 걸려 화학 치료를 받고 있던 형수님에게 "고질병 때문에 고생하며 사는 게 어떤 건지 이해하는 사람은 아무도 없어"라는 말을 했는데, 이 말이 뭐가 잘못됐는지 모를 정도였어요. 도리스는 자신의 알레르기를 두고 이런 말을 한 거에요!
지금은 아버지께서 암과 투병 중이세요. 아버지께서는 도리스와 함께 세 자녀와 손자 손녀들을 보러 오셨어요. 도리스는 저희를 방문하는 내내 코감기에 걸렸다는 말을 계속하고, 자기를 호텔로 데려다 달라고 보채서 저희와 아버지가 함께 할 수 있는 시간을 줄여놓았어요. (아무도 눈치채지 못할 정도의 감기 증세였어요.)
저는 도리스가 아버지를 사랑하고 있다고 확신해요, 그리고 결혼한 지 20년이나 됐으니 서로 익숙할 거에요. 하지만 아버지께서 죽음을 앞두고 계시는 마당에, 도리스의 감정적 요구를 받아주는 게 너무 힘들어요. 그 건강염려증 증세가 너무 짜증나거든요. 하지만, 도리스의 정신 이상에도 불구하고 아버지께서는 저희가 자신의 두 번째 부인을 버리는 건 걸 원치 않으실 거에요. 어떻게 생각하세요?
DEAR NEEDS HELP: You can try talking Doris out of her hypochondria until you're blue in the face, but it will only make her try harder to convince you that she's sick -- so stop trying. Instead, every time you see her, tell her she looks TERRIBLE; you've never seen her look worse. It's what she's " dying" to hear, and she'll love you for it!
지쳐서 창백해 질 때까지 도리스를 설득해서 건강염려증에서 벗어나게 하려고 노력할 수도 있겠지만 이는 오히려 도리스에게 자신이 아프다는 것을 더욱 열심히 말하도록 할 뿐이에요. 그러니 그만두세요. 대신에, 도리스를 볼 때마다, 얼굴이 안 좋다고 말해주세요; 그렇게 안 좋은 모습을 한 번도 보지 못했다고요. 그 말이 도리스가 '죽도록' 듣고 싶어하는 말이고, 그런 말을 해준 독자님을 사랑할 거에요.
