[LEAD]
As the coldest days of the winter continue, South Korea's special forces are carrying out extreme cold-weather training. Navy deep-sea rescue units plunged into icy waters, while the Army Special Warfare Command maneuvered across snow-covered mountains.

[REPORT]
On a windy coastline, soldiers warm up in short sleeves and shorts.

They are the members of the Navy Sea Salvage and Rescue Unit, an elite deep-sea diving special unit also known as the maritime rescue service.

This time, they change into diving suits.

Cho Hye-jin / KBS reporter
The water temperature is 5 degrees Celsius, which is too cold for an ordinary person to endure even for ten minutes.

Seventy deep-sea divers participated in the training, which lasted three days during the coldest time of the year, known as 'daehan'.

Bae Dae-pyeong / SSU deep-sea diver
We are ready to dive into the sea to carry out our mission even during the coldest period.

The SSU is the first to be mobilized for search and rescue operations at maritime accident sites.

They overcome the cold with mental strength and physical endurance.

Dressed in camouflage, soldiers move on snow-covered mountains and descend slopes on tactical skis carrying rifles and 40 kg of combat gear.

Kim Un-seong / Special Warfare Command
All our members come together as one team to overcome the weather conditions of an actual winter battlefield.

The Army Special Warfare Command is also holding an 11-night, 12-day cold-weather training despite the wind chills of minus 30 degrees Celsius.
