[News Today] DP chair proposes merger with RKP

Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae has made a surprise proposal for a merger with the Rebuilding Korea Party. The proposal comes four months ahead of the local elections. The Rebuilding Korea Party said it shares the broader goal, but will first seek public and party members' views before deciding.

The surprise proposal from Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae came without prior notice.

He proposed a merger with the minor Rebuilding Korea Party in an effort to ensure the success of the Lee Jae Myung administration.

I believe we should run together as one team in line with the spirit of the times, toward the goal of the Lee Jae Myung administration's success.

RKP leader Cho Kuk responded in less than an hour.

He took a cautious stance saying that while he agrees with the goal of ensuring the success of the Lee Jae Myung administration he will carefully examine the people's will.

Cho noted the proposal was conveyed a day earlier but that proper procedures must come first.

The proposed merger can reshape the ruling party landscape as well as the June local elections.

Noting it was informed in advance, the presidential office said it will observe how discussions proceed between the two parties.

For a merger to be finalized, both parties need to take the step of seeking members' consent such as through a vote.
