Congolese refugees in Busuma camp in Burundi

epa12672022 Refugees from neighbouring North and South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo seek medical consultations in Busuma refugee camp, under the UNHCR, in the district of Ruyigi, Buhumuza province, Burundi, 21 January 2026 (issued on 22 January 2026). Over 65,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo who fled the fightings in their country have ended up in the Busuma camp where they are confronted with other hardships such as insufficient drinking water and difficult living conditions. On 16 January several thousand of them attempted to march toward the town center, demanding a voluntary return home despite the persistent insecurity there, and denouncing living conditions they deem unbearable in the refugees camp.
