Samsung’s Roh Tae-moon highlights AI’s value in WSJ contribution

Roh Tae-moon, chief executive officer of Samsung Electronics Co. and head of the company’s Device eXperience (DX) division, highlighted practicality, openness, and trust as priorities in artificial intelligence (AI) development in an opinion piece written in the Wall Street Journal.

In the opinion titled “Successful AI Will Be Simply a Part of Life,” Roh cited Amara’s Law, noting that people tend to overestimate the short-term impact of technology while underestimating its long-term effects.

He wrote that AI development should not lose sight of factors that allow the technology to evolve into practical, everyday innovation.

Roh distinguished AI from a simple invention, noting that the central question is no longer whether people recognize AI, but how useful and helpful it is in real life. He said building trust through an understanding of context and intent is essential.

He added that the true value of AI will not be measured through benchmarks or model comparisons, but in everyday moments that help more people understand the world, engage more fully, and manage daily life more easily.

The opinion piece is widely seen as outlining the AI strategy of Samsung Electronics’ DX division, as questions grow over how the company will differentiate its AI services, following Apple Inc.’s decision to expand the use of Google LLC’s Gemini AI model across the iPhone lineup.

Gemini was first introduced on Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones.
